Volunteer Manager
Job Overview:
We are looking for a skilled Volunteer Manager to join our team of diverse professionals at WILDNorth. In this position, you will be responsible for recruiting and managing more than 200 volunteers. Based in Edmonton and established in 1989, WILDNorth is the only full-scope wildlife rehabilitation organization in northern Alberta. Our mandate is to provide compassionate care to injured and orphaned wildlife and to educate the public on wildlife in the community.
Authority/Accountability: The Volunteer Manager reports directly to the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and onboarding of volunteers to support multiple programs and departments
- Develop and maintain volunteer recruitment materials, outreach campaigns, and community partnerships; represent the organization at recruitment fairs, volunteer events, and public engagement opportunities
- Coordinate and facilitate volunteer orientation, training sessions, continuing education opportunities, and development resources to ensure volunteers are equipped to safely and effectively support wildlife rehabilitation operations
- Manage volunteer scheduling, placement, communication, and day-to-day coordination across multiple departments and program areas
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive volunteer culture that prioritizes teamwork, safety, retention, recognition, and volunteer wellbeing in a high-emotion care environment
- Maintain accurate volunteer records, databases, onboarding documentation, training records, scheduling systems, and hours tracking in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements
- Provide ongoing supervision, mentorship, feedback, and performance evaluation for volunteers, including conflict resolution and support with challenging situations
- Collaborate closely with animal care staff, rescue teams, education staff, and leadership to identify operational volunteer needs and ensure appropriate volunteer support coverage during both regular operations and seasonal influx periods
- Assist in the planning and coordination of volunteer appreciation initiatives, special events, fundraising activities, and community outreach programs
- Collect, analyze, and report volunteer program statistics, retention data, and program outcomes to support organizational planning, grant reporting, and program development
- Create and distribute volunteer communications, training materials, presentations, social media content, and internal resources using a variety of digital platforms and software programs
- Monitor and work within departmental budgets, supporting cost-effective program delivery and resource allocation
- Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety procedures, biosecurity protocols, wildlife handling standards, and organizational policies
- Support efforts to maintain an organized and clean facility to optimize workflow
- Ensure that the ways in which we accomplish our work are grounded in our values and principles
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of wildlife rehabilitation operations and organizational goals
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Two years’ experience as Volunteer Coordinator or similar role
- Knowledge of native Alberta wildlife species natural history
- Working knowledge of MS Office and solid computer skills
- Experience using HR and recruiting tools
- Team player
- Good time-management skills
- Great interpersonal and communication skills
- Customer service experience is a bonus
- Formal education in communications or related field is preferred
Additional Information:
- Wage: 40K per year, plus benefits and robust paid holiday
- 40 hours per week, full-time
